Softball: Class 3A wins for Wauconda, Antioch, Carmel

Brooke Sefcik homered, doubled and knocked in 4 runs, and Wauconda's softball team beat eighth-seeded Resurrection 6-3 in the championship game of the Class 3A Elmwood Park regional on Saturday.

Kayla Wedl, who missed the North Suburban Conference championship game for Wauconda due to back stiffness, started in the circle for the No. 1 seed. She pitched 2 scoreless innings, allowing 1 hit while striking out six and walking one. Freshman Kayla Serio relieved Wedl and earned the win, allowing 8 hits over the last five innings. She struck out four, walked two and was charged with 2 earned runs.

Serio also hit a double, as Wauconda (25-7) advanced to its own sectional. Mallory Carver doubled as well and along with Sefcik and Alyssa McCarthy contributed a pair of hits. Wedl was 1-for-4 at the plate.

The score was tied 1-1, before Wauconda scored 3 runs in the bottom of the fourth. Sefcik's homer was a 2-run shot.

The Bulldogs will next play No. 4 Carmel at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Antioch 17, St. Viator 2: At St. Viator, the second-seeded Sequoits broke open the Class 3A regional final by scoring 15 runs in the third inning en route to the five-inning win against the No. 7 seed.

Jackalyn Geraty was 3-for-3 with 4 RBI for Antioch (26-11), which advances to the Wauconda sectional and will face No. 6 Vernon Hills (16-19) at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. Carlie Gaylord and Annie Wagner each had 2 doubles and 3 RBI for the Sequoits. The winners also received 2 hits each from Ashley Stephens (2 RBI), Deighton Butenschoen (2 RBI) and Megan Lawrence (3 runs scored).

Hannah Cook pitched 2⅔ innings in relief of Stephanie Bonaguidi and earned the win. Cook allowed 4 hits and earned run, while striking out a pair.

Carmel 1, Ridgewood 0: At Carmel, Amanda Elert's one-out single in the bottom of the eighth inning gave the fourth-seeded Corsairs a walk-off win in the Class 3A regional final.

"It was a heck of a game," said Carmel coach Shane Schueneman, whose Corsairs (23-11) will play top-seeded Wauconda in the Wauconda sectional semifinals at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. "Both teams had chances."

In the Carmel eighth, Jen Giesey drew a leadoff walk. Pinch runner Emily Haley stole second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch. No. 5 Ridgewood got a pop-up for the first out.

But with the outfielders playing in, Elert hit a flyball that dropped on the warning track, scoring Haley.

Claire Petrus pitched the complete-game shutout, allowing 2 hits and striking out 11. Dani DeLozier and Karina Falkstrom were both 2-for-4 for Carmel.

Zion-Benton 5, New Trier 1: At Lake Zurich, McKenna Creekmore pitched a no-hitter in the Class 4A regional final for the second-seeded Zee-Bees, who advanced to the Buffalo Grove sectional.

Zion-Benton will play No. 3 Warren at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Warren swept Z-B in North Suburban Lake action.
