The Latest: Target settles lawsuits tied to girl's stabbing

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Latest on lawsuits linked to a girl's stabbing in a Pittsburgh Target store (all times local):

1 p.m.

The retailer Target has announced amid a Pittsburgh civil trial that it has settled several lawsuits stemming from the stabbing of a 16-year-old girl inside one of its stores.

The girl's family claimed the Minneapolis-based retailer didn't provide enough security to keep her from being stabbed by a homeless man in March 2013. The girl has recovered, and the homeless man, Leon Walls, has been convicted and sentenced to prison.

But Target sued two of three men who helped subdue Walls, claiming they precipitated the attack by bringing a "street" dispute into the store. The men then countersued, saying they were hurt merely by trying to help the girl.

The Minneapolis-based Target says all the parties have "reached a mutually agreeable, confidential settlement."

Attorneys couldn't immediately be reached for comment.

An attorney for the family of a teenage girl who was stabbed by a homeless man in a Pennsylvania Target store says the retailer failed to provide enough security to prevent her from being wounded.

The comments were made Wednesday during open statements in a lawsuit against the retailer. The trial is expected to last two weeks and is a combination of three lawsuits.

Leon Walls was convicted in the 2013 stabbing and was sentenced to 10 to 20 years behind bars.

The girl's attorney says Target should have stopped Walls. But Target sued Walls and three men hailed as heroes for rescuing her, saying they created the situation by bringing a "street" dispute into the store.

Two of the three men have countersued Minneapolis-based Target.

The girl has recovered.
