Boomers split doubleheader with Slammers

JOLIET - The Schaumburg Boomers split a home and home doubleheader with the Joliet Slammers on Tuesday.

In Game 1, the Boomers rallied for three runs in the seventh inning to tie the Joliet Slammers at 5-5 but ultimately fell 10-7 in 12 innings.

The Boomers played catch up for much of the game, allowing a run in the second before answering with one of their own in the bottom of the frame. Starting pitcher Josh Heddinger allowed 3 runs in the fourth inning and another in the sixth. The Boomers scored in the seventh with an RBI single from Mark Nelson and a 2-run RRBI single from Paul Kronenfeld. Kronenfeld finished the game with two hits including a double in the fourth inning.

Despite threatening in the bottom of the ninth, Schaumburg failed to score. and the teams went to extras. Both teams scored two runs in the 11th. Jordan Dean singled in a run and Nelson hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 7. But the Slammers then scored three in the top of the 12th and Kevin McNorton retired the Boomers in order in the bottom of the inning to seal the victory.

But in Game 2, the Boomers struck back, breaking a franchise record eight-game losing streak with a 5-2 road win

With the game tied in the top of the fifth, Justin Byrd delivered a 2-run single to give the Boomers the lead for good. James Keller added a 2-run busted bat single in the ninth. The runs were enough for Seth Webster, who worked 7 innings to win for the first time this season. Webster fanned seven. Keller posted a pair of hits in the win while Chris Robinson reached base three times and scored twice.

The Boomers (2-9) play at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Joliet. Right-hander Scott Schultz starts against right-hander Liam O'Sullivan. Hear all of the action on WRMN-1410-AM
