Notre Dame to lease part of school, demolish rest

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - The University of Notre Dame plans to demolish most of the former St. Joseph's High School this summer and lease what remains to Holy Cross College.

Holy Cross College announced Tuesday it has entered into a long-term lease for the remaining space with Notre Dame. It will use the property for art and science classes and faculty offices.

Holy Cross President John Paige told the South Bend Tribune (http://bit.ly/1sOIlyr ) that the additional space should satisfy the college's academic needs for at least five or six years. He says the college plans to build a new academic building near the center of campus.

The facility has stood mostly vacant since the high school built a new building in 2012. The 167,000-square-foot Catholic high school opened in 1953.
