Autopsy finds man found dead after shootout killed himself

CHICAGO (AP) - An autopsy has determined a suburban Chicago man found dead in his home after a shootout with FBI agents committed suicide.

The Cook County medical examiner's office said Wednesday that 50-year-old Melvin Toran shot himself in his mouth. Toran died after an FBI SWAT team descended on his Park Forest house on Tuesday. The resulting gun battle left two agents wounded.

FBI spokesman Garrett Croon said the injured agents were released after being treated at hospitals.

The attempted arrest of Toran stemmed from a two-year investigation of drugs and firearms activity. Agents continued to gather evidence at the house on Wednesday.

Authorities describe Toran as a street gang member with a long criminal record that included murder at age 18, drug dealing, assaulting a police officer and weapons violations.
