Police: Driver approaches girl walking to school in Mount Prospect

Mount Prospect police issued a community alert Wednesday after a man in a minivan approached a 14-year-old girl walking to school.

The girl was walking through the parking lot of Saint Cecilia Catholic Church, 700 S. Meier Road, at 7:05 a.m., when a man driving a dark gray Toyota Sienna parked in the lot began speaking to her, according to police.

The driver spoke to the girl in Korean, initially asking for directions, and she spoke back to him in Korean, according to Officer Greg Sill. But Sill said the conversation soon turned inappropriate when the man started talking about the clothes the girl was wearing.

The girl ran to nearby Holmes Junior High School, where she is a student, and the minivan exited the church parking lot, Sill said.

The driver is described as an Asian man in his mid-20s, with a medium build and round face, wearing a dark-colored baseball cap and black shirt.

Police said they will have an increased presence in the area, and are urging parents and children to be extra vigilant in the days ahead and to call 911 if they see a suspect or vehicle matching the description.

Last Thursday, police issued a similar community alert after a man approached a boy on his way to Lincoln Middle School and asked if he needed a ride. In that case, police say a man in a black SUV with tinted windows spoke to a 13-year-old boy near Council Trail and NaWaTa Avenue. Authorities described the driver as a white man, approximately 50 to 60 years old, who spoke English with a Middle Eastern accent.

Sill said police do not believe there is a connection between the two incidents.
