District 203 seeking 'team player' to fill board vacancy

An experienced voice has left the Naperville Unit District 203 school board and the search is on to find a new board member by early July.

The district will be accepting applications until June 2 to fill a vacancy created by the May 20 resignation of 13-year school board member Suzyn Price.

Price's term was to last until 2019, but the person appointed to fill the vacancy only will serve until the next election on April 4, 2017.

Board President Terry Fielden said remaining members met Sunday to discuss what characteristics they'd like to see in their appointee and the process for filling the vacant seat.

"We'll be looking for a team player," he said. "Someone who's able to communicate well, a person familiar with District 203 - both with the education values and our mission statement. Preferably someone that's been following some of the board meetings of late and is aware of the budget and what's on the agenda."

Applicants are asked to submit a one-page letter expressing their interest in serving, what they could offer District 203 and what prior experience and involvement they've had with the district. The letter, along with a resume, is due to Ann Bell, secretary to the board of education, by 3:30 p.m. Thursday, June 2.

Applicants also will need to download a statement of economic interest from the DuPage County website, fill it out and file it with the DuPage County Clerk. Letters of interest and resumes can be submitted by email to abell@naperville203.org; by fax to (630) 983-2236; in person at the Public Schools Administration Center, 203 W. Hillside Road, Naperville, IL, 60540; or by mail to the same address.

"The board is encouraging people to apply and come and talk to us about gaining the seat," Fielden said.

After reviewing candidates in closed session on June 6, the board plans to conduct interviews June 15 and possibly June 16. Fielden said the board's goal is to appoint its next member during a meeting June 20.
