Lake County celebrates Memorial Day with parades and ceremonies

Communities throughout Lake County will commemorate Memorial Day, which is Monday, May 30, with parades and ceremonies. Here are some of the events planned in and around Lake County to honor the nation's fallen servicemen and women:

College of Lake County Memorial Day Ceremony: noon, Friday, May 27, C Wing Auditorium, 19351 W. Washington St., Grayslake. The ceremony will include keynote address by Paul Hettich, U.S. Army, and reciting names of servicemen with Lake County ties who died in Iraq and Afghanistan. Because of construction, park in lot 7, enter at the C1 door and proceed to the lower level C Wing. Barrington Memorial Day parade: Steps off at 10:30 a.m. Monday, at Cook and Main streets, residents and members of the VFW then walk to Evergreen Cemetery for a short service to commemorate U.S. men and women who died in service to their country. Visit www.barrington-il.gov. Free.

Buffalo Grove Memorial Day ceremony: 11 a.m. Monday, Knopf Cemetery, on Arlington Heights Road, north of Checker Drive. Speakers are Lake County Treasurer David Stolman and Buffalo Grove Chief of Police Steven Casstevens. Hosted by Kingswood United Methodist Church. (847) 398-0770.

Fox Lake Memorial Day Ceremony: 11 a.m. Monday, Fox Lake Metra Station at Grand Avenue and Nippersink Boulevard. Ceremony sponsored by the Fox Lake American Legion Post 703. For information, call (847) 587-2323. Free.

Fox River Grove Memorial Day parade: 8:30 a.m. Monday. Parade starts at Algonquin Road School and continues down Algonquin Road to South River Road to the baseball diamond along for Fox River in Lions Park. www.foxriver grove-il.org

Grayslake Memorial Day Parade and Service: 9:30 a.m. Monday, Grayslake Central High School, 400 N. Lake St., Grayslake. Memorial Day parade starts near the Grayslake Central High School parking lot on Lake Street and travels south on Lake to Junior Avenue and east to Memorial Park for a service. The keynote speaker is Col. Paul T. Ahern, U.S. Army Reserve (Retired), of Grayslake. For information, call (847) 223-8515. Free.

Gurnee Memorial Day Ceremony: Noon, Monday, Gurnee Police Department, 100 N O'Plaine Road, Gurnee. Annual Gurnee Memorial Day ceremony sponsored by American Legion Post 771. Guest speaker and local school bands playing patriotic music. For information, call (847) 244-9282. Free.

Lake Villa Memorial Day Parade and Memorial Service: 1 p.m. Monday, Lehmann Park, 89 Cedar Ave., Lake Villa. Join Lake Villa VFW Post 4308 and Boy Scout Troop 323 for the annual parade, which travels through downtown. Memorial service follows the parade at Lehmann Park. Lake Zurich Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony: 10:30 a.m. Monday, Main Street and Old Rand Road, Lake Zurich. Parade featuring the Lake Zurich High School band and youth organizations steps off from Main Street proceeds one half mile on Old Rand Road to the Veterans Monument near the Lake Zurich Police Department. Libertyville Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony: Parade begins at 9:30 a.m. Monday, from the Metra train station on Lake Street south on Milwaukee Avenue to Cook Park for a ceremony and speakers. An observance follows at Lakeside Cemetery on Lake Street. For information, www.libertyville.com. Free.

Lincolnshire Memorial Day Ceremony: 10 a.m. Monday, Spring Lake Park, 49 Oxford Drive, Lincolnshire. In addition to the color guard and brass band, the guest speaker will be Capt. Jim Hawkins, executive officer of Naval Station Great Lakes. Worn American flags also will be retired as part of the event. For information, village.lincolnshire.il.us. Free.

Lindenhurst Memorial Day Ceremony: 10 a.m. Monday, at the Veterans Memorial at the entrance to Lindenhurst Village Hall, 2301 East Sand Lake Road, Lindenhurst. Historic Millburn Community Association's annual Memorial Day service: 2 p.m., Monday, at the Millburn Cemetery on Millburn Road in Old Mill Creek. You are invited to bring a chair to sit on and flowers to place on Veterans' graves after the service. Lemonade and cookies will be served at the conclusion of the event. Mundelein Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony: 10 a.m. Monday, Mundelein Metra Train Station, 205 N. Archer Ave., Mundelein. The American Legion Post #867 and the village of Mundelein invites all men and women who are veterans to participate. Parade forms at 9:15 a.m. and ends at Memorial Park, where the mayor will speak. All veterans in the parade have the option of riding in an open vehicle, which must be provided by the participant, or in the trolley. Uniforms or hats can be worn indicating which branch of the service. www.mundelein.org. Free.

Round Lake Area Memorial Day Ceremony and Parade: Opening ceremony 9:30 a.m. Monday, American Legion in Round Lake Park; parade begins at 10 a.m. in front of American Legion; 10:30 a.m. ceremony in Round Lake during parade; parade ends at 11 a.m. with closing ceremony at Village of Round Lake Beach Memorial. Wauconda Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony: 10 a.m. Monday, Main Street Wauconda. Celebrating more than 60 years, the parade travels along Main Street and ends at Memorial Park, where there is an American Legion ceremony honoring the veterans. For information, www.american legionpost911.org. Free.

Waukegan Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony: 10 a.m. Monday, Grand Avenue and Genesee Street, Waukegan. Proceeds to Veteran's Memorial Plaza at the southwest corner of West and Washington streets, for a ceremony honoring veterans. The Waukegan High School JROTC will take part in the parade. Wheeling Memorial Day parade: Steps off 10 a.m., Monday, from Weiland Road and McHenry Road. Parade goes south on Lexington Drive and ends at AMVETS Post 66, 700 McHenry Road. Free. (847) 537-0440.
