A cookout for cops: Volunteers treat Elgin police to dinner and dessert

Police officers in Elgin enjoyed a day of appreciation during National Police Week.

Seniors from Senior Services Associates brought balloons and cupcakes to the police department Friday, when members of the Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association organized a cookout in the back parking lot.

This was the 10th year that volunteers have held the cookout.

Folks from the Elgin Senior Services center release balloons in honor of the Elgin Police Department as Chief Jeff Swoboda looks on Friday. The group, armed with balloons and cupcakes for the festivities, walked over from the center to show their appreciation for the police. COURTESY OF CHERIE ASCHENBRENNER
