From somber ceremonies to patriotic parades, Memorial Day weekend presents many opportunities to pay tribute to the past and enjoy the present. Here's a look at what's scheduled in the suburbs:

Brookfield Zoo's Festival of Flight: 10 a.m. Saturday, May 28, at Brookfield Zoo, 3300 Golf Road, Brookfield. Brookfield Zoo's bird show, Festival of Flight, begins Memorial Day weekend and runs through Monday, Sept. 5. See birds demonstrate their natural flight abilities during this interactive experience. Streamwood Memorial Day observance: 8 p.m. Saturday, May 28, and 11 a.m. Sunday, May 29, at the Village Hall/Veterans Memorial, 301 E. Irving Park Road, Streamwood. A POW/MIA candlelight vigil begins at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 28. Vigil guard marches past the monoliths all night (beginning at 9 p.m.) until 11 a.m. Sunday for the official Memorial Day ceremony. Arlington Heights Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony: 97th annual parade steps off at 9:30 a.m. Monday, May 30, from Village Hall, 33 S. Arlington Heights Road; heads west on Sigwalt to Dunton, then north on Dunton to Euclid, west on Euclid to Chestnut and south to Memorial Park. Grayslake Memorial Day Parade and Service: 9:30 a.m. Monday, May 30, at Grayslake Central High School, 400 N. Lake St., Grayslake. Parade starts near the Grayslake Central High School parking lot on Lake Street and travels south on Lake to Junior Avenue, then east to Memorial Park for the service. Free. (847) 223-8515.

Itasca Memorial Day Parade: 9:30 a.m. Monday, May 30, at Bryn Mawr and Catalpa, Itasca. Parade proceeds to Usher Park, 203 S. Walnut, where a ceremony will be held. Free. itascaparkdistrict.com.

Libertyville Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony: Parade begins at 9:30 a.m. Monday, May 30, from the Metra train station on Lake Street, and proceeds south on Milwaukee Avenue to Cook Park for a ceremony and speakers. An observance follows at Lakeside Cemetery on Lake Street. Free. libertyville.com.

Mount Prospect Memorial Day Parade: 9:30 a.m. Monday, May 30, from Emerson Street and Busse Avenue, south on Emerson to Lincoln Street to the Veterans Memorial Band Shell at Lions Park for ceremony. Any citizen can march, and veterans are encouraged to join. (847) 577-5374. vfw1337.us.

Round Lake Area Memorial Day Ceremony and Parade: Opening ceremony at 9:30 a.m. Monday, May 30, at the American Legion in Round Lake Park; parade begins at 10 a.m. in front of the American Legion; 10:30 a.m. ceremony during the parade; the parade ends at 11 a.m. with a closing ceremony at Village of Round Lake Beach Memorial. Algonquin Memorial Day Parade: 10 a.m. Monday, May 30. American Legion Post 1231 parade begins near the veterans' monument at the Algonquin Cemetery, proceeds south down North Main Street to Front Street, and then ends at Riverfront Park. algonquin.org.

Bartlett Memorial Day Walk and Remembrance: 10 a.m. Monday, May 30, at Bartlett Park, Oak and North avenues. American Legion flag retirement ceremony. Memorial Walk to Bartlett Cemetery steps off at 11 a.m., followed by a short program honoring Bartlett's heroes. village.bartlett.il.us.

Elburn Memorial Day Procession: 10 a.m. Monday, May 30, at the north end of Blackberry Township cemetery, Route 47 and Keslinger Road, ends at Blackberry Township Cemetery. Hosted by American Legion Post 630. Elburn Boy Scouts Troop 7 will host a Memorial Day pancake breakfast from 7 to 9:30 a.m. at the Elburn American Legion, 112 N. Hanover Park Memorial Day Ceremony: 10 a.m. Monday, May 30, at Hanover Park Village Hall, 2121 W. Lake St., Hanover Park. Held at Veterans Memorial Plaza in front of the Municipal Building. Free. hpil.org.

Hoffman Estates/Schaumburg Memorial Day: 10 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. Monday, May 30. Memorial observance starts at 10 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial outside the Hoffman Estates Police Department, 411 W. Higgins Road. Guests are invited to go to historic St. Peter Lutheran Church, 202 E. Schaumburg Road, Schaumburg, for a 10:45 a.m. ceremony hosted by Schaumburg Mayor Al Larson and Hoffman Estates Mayor Bill McLeod. Lindenhurst Memorial Day Ceremony: 10 a.m. Monday, May 30, at the Veterans Memorial at the entrance to Lindenhurst Village Hall, 2301 E. Sand Lake Road, Lindenhurst. Mundelein Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony: 10 a.m. Monday, May 30, at the Metra train station, 205 N. Archer Ave., Mundelein. The American Legion Post #867 and the village of Mundelein invite all veterans to participate. Parade forms at 9:15 a.m. and ends at Memorial Park, where the mayor will speak. All veterans in the parade have the option of riding in an open vehicle, which must be provided by the participant, or in the trolley. Uniforms or hats can be worn indicating which branch of the service. Free. mundelein.org.

Palatine Memorial Day Ceremony and Parade: 10 a.m. Monday, May 30, at Community Park, Palatine and Oak, Palatine. Starts with a 10 a.m. service at Hillside Cemetery on Smith Street in Palatine. Parade starts at 10:15 a.m. from Cornell Avenue and Smith Street. Goes north on Smith, east on Robertson, south on Brockway and then east on Wood to the Veterans Memorial in Community Park. Short program at 11 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial. Another ceremony follows at 12:15 p.m. at the Legion Memorial in Towne Square, 150 W. Palatine Road. South Elgin Memorial Day Service: 10 a.m. Monday, May 30, at Panton Mill Park, 10 N. Water St., South Elgin. Led by South Elgin VFW Post 2327. In case of inclement weather, the event will be held in the municipal annex. Free. southelgin.com.

St. Charles Memorial Day Parade: 10 a.m. Monday, May 30, starting at Sixth and Main streets and continuing to Riverside Avenue, ending at Freedom Shrine (along the Fox River north of the police department) where there will be a ceremony. stcharlesil.gov.

Wauconda Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony: 10 a.m. Monday, May 30, on Main Street in downtown Wauconda. Parade travels along Main Street and ends at Memorial Park, where there will be an American Legion ceremony honoring the veterans. Free. americanlegionpost911.org.

Wheeling Memorial Day Parade: Steps off at 10 a.m. Monday, May 30, from Weiland and McHenry roads, Wheeling. Parade goes south on Lexington Drive and ends at AMVETS Post 66, 700 McHenry Road. Free. (847) 537-0440.

Waukegan Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony: 10 a.m. Monday, May 30, at Grand Avenue and Genesee Street, Waukegan. Proceeds to Veterans Memorial Plaza at the southwest corner of West and Washington streets, for a ceremony honoring veterans. Free. waukeganweb.net.

Cary Memorial Day Parade: 10:15 a.m. Monday, May 30, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church on First Street and Three Oaks Road. Proceeds south on First Street and ends at the Cary Veterans Park. caryillinois.com.

Barrington Memorial Day Parade: 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 30, at Cook and Main streets, Barrington. Residents and members of the VFW then walk to Evergreen Cemetery for a short service to commemorate those who died in service to their country. Free. barrington-il.gov.

Lake Zurich Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony: 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 30, at Main Street and Old Rand Road, Lake Zurich. Parade features the Lake Zurich High School band and youth organizations stepping off from Main Street. It proceeds one half mile on Old Rand Road to the Veterans Monument near the Lake Zurich Police Department. A brief ceremony follows. Free. alpost964il.org.

Aurora Memorial Day Parade: Noon Monday, May 30, from Benton and River, then east on Benton, north on Broadway, west on Downer Place and ending at River Street. Historic Millburn Community Association's annual Memorial Day Service: 2 p.m. Monday, May 30, at the Millburn Cemetery on Millburn Road in Old Mill Creek. Island Lake Memorial Day Celebration: 3 p.m. Monday, May 30, in Veterans Park, 432 W. State Road, Island Lake.
