Softball: Tyler, Glenbard East stop Glenbard West

A very young Glenbard East softball team has played its best in May, winning six of 10 games to close the regular season.

That momentum carried into the opening round of the Class 4A playoffs on Monday. The Rams prevailed 6-2 over Glenbard West in the Class 4A Bartlett regional quarterfinals in Glen Ellyn.

Glenbard East (10-20) advances to take on second seed Conant on Tuesday at Bartlett.

"You want to be at your best at this time of the season," said Glenbard East coach Nikki Simpson, whose team has four sophomores and three freshmen on a roster of 12. "We are taking that momentum and running with it. At the beginning of the season, we were faced with a lot of injuries. It's nice to have them all back and they are playing their best right now."

The visitors got an outstanding pitched game from sophomore Tori Tyler, who missed nearly a month of the season with an injury. She retired the side in order in five of the seven innings and allowed only 4 hits. In addition, the defense behind the right-hander was flawless as the Rams committed no errors.

"It was a good team effort," Tyler said. "I came out throwing strikes and I'm glad I had my defense with me today. Our fielding has been great. We came out ready to play and we also got some timely hits."

Indeed, the offense mustered 9 hits in the contest. Alivia Chuman kicked off the scoring with an RBI triple in the first inning before adding a run-scoring single in the third. Joselyn Molinar and Marissa West also drove in runs with singles.

Glenbard West finishes the spring 7-21. The Hilltoppers scored both of their runs in the seventh inning, with Isabel Hermanson collecting an RBI double and Kaitlyn Ohrnstein following with a run-scoring hit.

Katherine Porter made a strong defensive play at second base and catcher Angela Flammini picked off a runner at first. Haley Walker tossed a complete game.

"I thought we played well defensively," Glenbard West coach Mary McGrane said. "And I thought Haley pitched well. Offensively, we just didn't show up to compete today."
