State Police announces traffic safety initiative

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Illinois State Police have joined a national initiative aimed at reducing fatalities on highways.

Authorities say in a Monday news release that the agency will beef up patrols on potions of Interstate 80 to monitor for speeding, driving under the influence, distracted driving and seat belt compliance. The effort is planned for Monday evening.

Police say I-80 is the second-longest interstate highway in the country. It spans more than 160 miles through Illinois.

State police will join the 20-state National Highway Transportation Safety Administration effort called "Click It or Ticket, Border to Border Operation."
