Lindenhurst man charged with possessing bombs

A Lindenhurst man is facing a felony charge after authorities found two suspected pipe bombs in his bedroom, officials said. Michael Suopys, 28, of the 800 block of Jefferson Drive, was ordered held on $1 million bail at a court appearance yesterday, according to a news release from the Lake County State's Attorney's office. He is charged with possessing bombs containing an explosive substance, officials said. Full story.

Pedestrians injured when struck by car near Sugar Grove

Two pedestrians were injured early yesterday morning when struck by a car while attempting to walk across Route 47 near Sugar Grove, Kane County authorities said. David Anderson, 43, of Bristol, Illinois, was flown by helicopter to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove for treatment of his injuries. Curtis Lippold, 26, of Aurora, was taken by ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Aurora and later flown by helicopter to Good Samaritan. Both were in serious condition, a hospital spokeswoman said. Five taken to hospitals in 5-vehicle crash

Five people were taken to hospitals yesterday after a five-vehicle crash on Interstate 90 in Hoffman Estates, Illinois State Police said. The pileup occurred about 4:15 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of the tollway near Barrington Road, police said. Five people were taken to area hospitals with nonlife-threatening injuries, according to state police. Full story.

Perks come with adopting a turtle in Lake County

The Preservation Foundation of the Lake County Forest Preserves is coordinating an Adopt-a-Turtle program as a new initiative to help protect the endangered Blanding's turtle, considered a big part of the Chicago area's natural history. In honor of World Turtle Day today, visitors can learn how to protect turtles and tortoises and their habitats, meet some of the hatchlings and go on a scavenger hunt hike during an educational program at Middlefork Savanna Forest Preserve in Lake Forest.
