Purse Sale With a Purpose to Raise Scholarship Money

The Waukegan Branch of the American Association of University Women is holding a fund-raiser on May 27 and 28 called Purse Sale with a Purpose. Proceeds from the sale of purses, scarves and costume jewelry will be used to provide a scholarship to a young woman graduating from high school and studying science, technology, engineering or math.

The AAUW is a nonpartisan, nonprofit group that empowers women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research. The Waukegan area branch was organized in 1928 and it represents all communities in northeast Lake County, Illinois. The branch also helped to organize the Lake County Women's Coalition.

The fund-raiser features donated items of 100 purses, 50 scarves and at least 100 pieces of costume jewelry for sale. Prices start at $1 and included in the purses for sale are 10 by Vera Bradley. Only cash or checks will be accepted.

The sale will be hosted in the garage and driveway of the Donohoe home, 34216 Homestead Road, in Gurnee. For more information about the event, contact Kathy Clay at kclay1938@att.net.

The Waukegan Area Branch is one of 1,000 local branches across the country. To learn more about the organization, go to www.aauw.org.
