Baseball: St. Viator musters up doubleheader sweep of Moline

St. Viator's baseball team had a winning visit to Moline, winning a low-scoring game to start the day and then coming up with a big offensive effort to win a slugfest in the sequel to complete a nonconference sweep.

In the second game, the Lions (20-15) pounded out 19 hits and scored 4 runs in the top of the seventh inning to reclaim the lead in a 13-11 victory.

The top of the batting order did the bulk of the damage for St. Viator, with Mike Ragauskis, Dan Sullivan, Cole Kmet and Shaun Falbo finishing a combined 11-for-20 with 8 RBI.

Sullivan and Kmet both homered, and Falbo and Michael Wittich doubled twice. Six pitchers toed the mound for the Lions, with the last of them, Falbo, getting the win after tossing a hitless and scoreless 1⅓ inning.

In the first game, Kmet's 3-run homer in the first inning was enough as the Lions got strong pitching from starter Tony Nagle (5⅔ IP, 7 hits) and reliever Bobby Perna (1⅓ hitless innings) in a 3-1 victory.

Buffalo Grove 4, Hoffman Estates 2: The visiting Bison won at powerball, getting a solo homer from John Carpinelli and a 2-run shot from Riley Rundquist.

Jack Vaselaney pitched 2 innings and got the win, and Rio Komatani (4 innings) and Carpinelli (1 inning) also pitched effectively.

Lucas Barnes and Luke Kulton both doubled for Hoffman Estates (12-17) in the sixth inning, but BG (16-17) didn't allow a run in the frame after getting a pair of outs on the basepaths.

Lake Park 9, Schaumburg 1: Tyler Fredrickson tripled and drove in a run but the Lancers produced 12 hits and 4 walks to pick up a nonconference win.

York 4, Prospect 3: The visiting Dukes scored twice in the seventh inning to reclaim the lead and pick up a nonconference win.

Ryan Molini went 3-for-3 for Prospect (19-11), which also got 2 hits from Travis Gates and doubles from Ryan Howe and Richie Baszek.

Hersey drops two: The visiting Huskies dropped a pair in nonconference play.

In the first game, Paul Tokar had a pair of hits and Brett Harris and Matt Abfall doubled, but Hersey (13-18-1) couldn't keep pace with the Warriors' 11-hit attack in a 9-3 loss.

Tokar walked twice and scored twice in the second game, but the Huskies were held to a total of 4 hits as McHenry starter Nick Lahrman earned the decision in an 8-4 outcome.

Dundee-Crown 4, Palatine 3: Brendan Walker produced a 3-run double in the bottom of the seventh, but the host Pirates came up short in a nonconference matchup.

Jack Trembley went the distance for Palatine (17-17), allowing 8 hits but only 1 earned run with 6 strikeouts and 4 walks.
