Woman killed, man wounded near Chicago police headquarters

CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago's police superintendent says the fatal shooting of a woman leaving a coffee shop near police headquarters is an indication how brazen violent offenders have become.

Superintendent Eddie Johnson said Friday 49-year-old Yvonne Nelson, a dispatcher with the city's 311 Center, was not the intended target. The man in his 20s, who Johnson said was a documented street gang member, was shot several times and seriously wounded.

The shooting occurred as Johnson and other police officials were at police headquarters touting the arrests of dozens of gang members in a sweep with federal agents.

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi says the shooter was chasing the intended target when he opened fire. He says extra police has been assigned to the area to investigate the crime. The wounded man is also being questioned.
