Price resigns from Dist. 203 school board

Suzyn Price had a hand in governing Naperville Unit District 203 for 13 years, but she now has served her last meeting as a school board member.

Price submitted her resignation Friday saying the board needs new opinions to continue governing effectively after concerns surfaced last August about the leadership of board President Terry Fielden and the group's ability to function.

"We've been together too long," said Price, 48, who was the board's vice president. "Our relationships affect the school district, so it's time for new energy, new ideas and new chemistry."

Price recapped some of her favorite moments from her involvement with the district during her final meeting Monday. She said her interest began in 2001 when she served on an advisory committee to determine if the district would need to ask voters for a tax increase to fund operations.

"I got involved because I believe in the value of local government and public education," Price said. "Public education is the place where we come together for a shared understanding of our nation and our world."

It turned out the district did pursue a tax increase for operations and she helped pass the measure in 2002. She then ran for election in 2003 and won the first of her four terms. Her service, Price said, was "exhilarating and sometimes infuriating and always gratifying."

Price said she enjoyed helping the district work toward major renovations to Naperville Central High School, construction of the Ann Reid Early Childhood Center and creation of programs for dual-language and all-day kindergarten. Educators knew she had the right priorities in mind, said Mark Bailey, president of the Naperville Unit Education Association.

"I applaud your honesty, your candor and your always keeping children centered in all of your actions," he told Price during her final meeting.

She made a positive impression on those serving with her, too, and they thanked her with a plaque and flowers.

"I've known your commitment to public education has always shown fourth to the community," Fielden said.

The board will meet in closed session at 7 p.m. Sunday to discuss next steps in filling the vacancy created by Price's resignation. The board has 45 days to fill her seat.

District 203 expects to release details on Monday about the search for a new board member.
