Softball: Menu included 3 homers for Fremd's Mazur

Message to Michelle Mazur: keep that pad and pencil handy.

And it might not hurt to have a peanut butter sandwich, avocado and an egg ready to go.

Those foods were in a lunch bag that Michelle, a sophomore who plays for Georgia Southern, dropped off to her little sister Jessica at Fremd High School on Wednesday afternoon.

Also in the bag was not a note with a few words of wisdom for her little sister.

It read "keep it simple, be in control of your body, and go get 'em."

Jessica got 'em.

The sophomore enjoyed a career day at Rolling Meadows, crushing 3 home runs and 2 doubles for 6 RBI in the Vikings' 23-0 shutout in the teams' final Mid-Suburban League games of the season.

Fremd (23-4) finished 14-2, just one game out of first place in the ultra-competitive West Division behind champion Conant (15-1).

"I'm glad I read that note," said a smiling Jessica, who came into the game with the same number of homers that she hit on Wednesday. "And the food was phenomenal.

"It felt good because I had been in a slump. I'm just trying to play for my team and hit line drives."

After doubling to right field in the second inning, Mazur's homer to lead off Fremd's 10-run third inning was a rocket to left center.

Her second at-bat in the inning hit off the left center field wall for a double that drove in two.

Mazur then delivered a 2-run shot in the fourth inning to the same spot as her first homer.

She finished off the day with a solo blast to dead center field in the fifth inning.

Weaver could not recall a Viking hitting 3 homers in one game during his 15 years in charge of the program.

"We know Jess has that power," said Weaver, a winner of 393 games. "When she puts together consistent at-bats, we know she is capable of that."

"She (Mazur) really puts her hands through the zone and hits with power," said Meadows coach Tony Wolanski.

Mazur wasn't the only Viking with 5 hits.

Leadoff batter Abby Iuorio went 5-for-5 with a walk, 3 runs and 2 RBI. Right behind her was Butler recruit and the No. 2 hitter in the order, Alyssa Garcia, who went 4-for-5 with a triple and 4 RBI.

Also getting into the home run act was junior shortstop Reagan Schneider, who belted her first of the season and second of her career. Schneider went 3-for-5 with her 2-run homer clearing the center field fence in the fourth inning.

Other multiple hitters for the Vikes were Ann Marie Sullivan (double) and Lexi D'Ambrosio while Julia Wacker, Kylie Hess and Becca Uhrich also hit safely.

Mazur (9-1) also got the win on the mound, giving up 1 hit in the final 3 innings. Starter Nikki Kehoe (14-3) retired six of the seven batters she faced in the first two innings.

Meadows (15-15, 6-10) broke up the no-hitter when sophomore third baseman Mallory King led off the top of the fourth inning with a single to center.

Mallory is part of three sister tandems who start for Meadows. Mallory' sister Megan, a senior, starts at second base.

Mustangs junior catcher Amanda Elkins threw out two runners trying to steal second base in the first two innings. Her twin sister Elizabeth was in left field.

Senior Meghan Slowik played center field while her freshman sister Caroline was in right field.

Freshman Sara Benner had one of the game's hardest-hit shots, a line out to Garcia in center field with two outs in the first inning.

"They're (Fremd) a really good team and they put a lot of pressure on you," said Wolanski, who has taken the Mustangs from 2 wins a year ago to 15 this spring. "We struggled on defense but we kept trying hard. Their slappers put so much pressure on you. We've just got to work to keep getting better."
