Baseball: Baumann excels as Carmel clinches
Chris Baumann followed up his no-hitter with another strong pitching performance, and Carmel Catholic's baseball team beat visiting St. Patrick 9-1 to clinch first place in the East Suburban Catholic Conference on Wednesday.
Baumann, who no-hit Marist on Saturday, improved to 5-2.
Carmel (19-9, 13-5) got doubles from Matt Collins (1-for-2, 2 RBI) and Drew Weigman (1-for-1, 3 RBI). Joey Lake was 1-for-3.
Lakes 2, Warren 1: Jack Christensen pitched 6 innings, and Ben Milewski struck out the final two hitters of the game with runners on first and second, as the Eagles won the North Suburban crossover.
Lakes (14-14) was led offensively by Stephen Mogged, who was 2-for-4 with a stolen base and run scored.
Christensen (4-3) did not allow an earned run. He allowed 4 hits and no walks, while striking out four. Milewski, who walked two in his lone inning, earned his first save.
Warren fell to 24-9.
Mundelein 7, Vernon Hills 3: Jake Breitenreiter went 3-for-3, and winning-pitcher Brendan Murphy struck out seven for the visiting Mustangs in the North Suburban crossover.
Mundelein (23-9) got 2 hits apiece from Drew Breitenreiter and Murphy. Reid Rubio added a double. Murphy went 5 innings, allowing 1 hit and 2 walks.
Connor McNamara had 2 hits in the losing effort for the Cougars.
Antioch 13, Lake Forest 8: Alex Unekis was 2-for-3 with a double and 3 RBI for the host Sequoits in the North Suburban crossover.
Connor Geidner went 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI for Antioch, and Ben Gutke finished 1-for-4 with 2 RBI.
Grant 3, Lake Zurich 1: Bryan Libby improved to 7-1 with a complete-game effort, striking out six and allowing no earned runs.
Grant (20-12) received 2 hits from Nolan Unger. Ethan Unger was 1-for-2, and Shawn Riley went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Lake Zurich fell to 11-18.
Libertyville 15, North Chicago 0: Brian Murphy went 3-for-3 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI for the Wildcats in the North Suburban crossover.
Darren Ioos had a 2-run double for Libertyville (20-10-1).
Zion-Benton 3, Round Lake 0: The host Panthers had only 2 hits, singles by Gianni Ocana and Jose Vazquez, in the North Suburban crossover.
Woodstock North 7, Grayslake Central 6: The Thunder scored in the bottom of the eighth to win the Fox Valley Conference game.
Sam Nozicka was 3-for-4 with a double for Grayslake Central. The Rams got 2 hits apiece from Jacob Rubino, Justin Shepley (double, 2 RBI) and Max Snowden.
