Girls soccer: Fremd turns the table on Lake Zurich

Earlier this season, Fremd's girls soccer team suffered a 1-goal loss to Lake Zurich. But the Vikings entered the postseason with some different ideas, which included getting past the first round of the regionals.

Mission accomplished for the 10th-seeded Vikings, who held off No. 5 Lake Zurich 2-1 in the Class 3A Carmel Catholic regional semifinal in Mundelein on Tuesday night.

"It's big, because (Lake Zurich) beat us in the second game of the season," Fremd coach Steve Keller said. "We've also been out of the playoffs in the first round for the last couple of years. To get this win is huge for the program and I'm happy for these girls. It got a little shaky at the end but we held on and we persevered."

Fremd (9-7-4) moves on to face the host No. 4 Carmel Catholic (12-2-4) in a regional final at 6 p.m. Friday. Carmel got past (13) Hersey 3-2 in the other semifinal.

Missy Adrian tallied the opening goal in the 25th minute off an assist from Emilia Peleckas for the Vikings.

Peleckas scored the second goal four minutes later taking a long service from Tara Bergles for a 2-0 advantage.

"I've been working all season to take that ball down, take it to the line and work it with my feet," Peleckas said. "If I can't beat them around, then I just shoot. I've been working on it and it's my go-to."

Lake Zurich (12-5-3) tried to push its way back in the second half by sending more pressure forward.

And the Bears did get one back in the 67th minute, as Rebecca Kubin chipped one into the corner off a slotted ball from Kristin Brousseau.

But the Bears couldn't get one more to tie the game.

"(Fremd) capitalized on their chances in the first half," Lake Zurich coach Michael Castronova said. "They came out with a good game plan. We did adjust a couple of things in the second half. We knew it would be a tough game, and a well-coached team. Fremd was playing its best soccer towards the end of the season. Hats off to them for finishing their chances. We had our chances for a tying goal and came up short."
