Girls soccer: Mundelein knocks off Buffalo Grove
Mundelein, the No. 7 seed in the Class 3A Palatine girls soccer sectional, earned postseason advancement by topping host Mid-Suburban East champion Buffalo Grove 1-0 on Tuesday.
The Mustangs will meet Libertyville at 6 p.m. Friday in regional title matchup at Buffalo Grove.
Libertyville 10, Waukegan 0: The second-seeded Wildcats had no trouble with their first-round postseason opponent in regional semifinal play at Buffalo Grove.
Jackie Widmark had 2 goals and an assist for Libertyville. Britt Dahlin scored twice as well.
Wauconda 4, Resurrection 0: At Vernon Hills, in a Class 2A regional semifinal, the second-seeded Bulldogs advanced to Saturday's 11 a.m. final against the host Cougars.
Kayla Wisniewski had 2 goals and an assist for Wauconda (13-2-2). Abigail McHugh and Aimee Berg also scored for the Bulldogs. Olivia Kuch and Erica Miller contributed assists. Keepers Ally Magiera and Jillian Rejczyk combined on the shutout.
Vernon Hills 2, Crystal Lake Central 1: At Vernon Hills, the sixth-seeded Cougars advanced to their own regional final, which is at 11 a.m. Saturday against Wauconda.
Becky Bahlmann and Ziggy Jezorski (game-winner) scored for Vernon Hills (10-7-2).
St. Viator 2, Antioch 0: At Antioch, as part of the Class 2A Grayslake North sectional, the ninth-seeded Lions prevailed, scoring both of their goals in the first half.
No. 8 Antioch finished 10-7-5.
St. Viator will play Deerfield in the regional final.
Grayslake North 3, Northside 0: At Prairie Ridge, the fifth-seeded Knights earned a berth in Friday's 4:30 p.m. regional final.
Grayslake North (15-5-3) got a first-half goal from Lauren Davis, assisted by Corryn Smith. Morgan Lyon and Lauren Hansen scored in the second half, with Kelley O'Brien assisting on both tallies.
"We had a quality team effort today, as everyone stepped up and played well," Knights coach Adam DeCaluwe said.
Grayslake North keeper Abby Rice earned the shutout with 6 saves.
Crystal Lake South 7, Grant 0: At Cary-Grove, as part of the Class 3A Streamwood sectional, the second-seeded Gators cruised.
Crystal Lake South improved to 14-5-1 and will meet No. 3 Cary-Grove in Friday's 5:30 p.m. regional final.
Barrington 12, Wheeling 0: The top-seeded Fillies advanced to the regional final round at 6 p.m. Friday against the winner of Wednesday's Palatine-Stevenson matchup.
Prospect 5, Zion-Benton 0: Shawna Stokes earned a hat trick and Faith Fitzsimmons and Ella Marzolf each added 1 goal as Prospect's girls soccer team advanced past Zion-Benton with a 5-0 decision in a Highland Park regional semifinal Tuesday.
Mehgan Rickett recorded the shutout in goal as the Knights improved to 13-5-4 and earned a spot in Saturday's 2 p.m. regional final against the winner of Wednesday's matchup between No. 6 seed Warren and No. 12 Highland Park.
