St. Viator clinches ESCC crown

St. Viator's boys volleyball team defeated Carmel on Tuesday to clinch its first East Suburban Catholic Conference title since 2005.

The host Lions prevailed 25-22, 25-23, sending their overall record to 26-8 and their conference mark to 7-1.

James Woods had a team-high 9 kills on 20-for-26 hitting, while Nathaniel Cull had 5 kills and Max Hogan 4.

Jonathan Meehan finished 13-for-13 serving with 2 aces and also led the Lions in digs with 9.

Senior setter Collin Cull was 62-for-62 setting and finished with 24 assists, while senior defensive specialist Matt Trunk had 8 digs and Hogan contributed 7.

St. Viator has earned the No. 6 seed in next week's Evanston sectional, and will get its first postseason test at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in regional semifinal action at Glenbrook North against Monday's Rolling Meadows/CICS Northtown winner.

Hersey d. Palatine: In the matchup of second-place division finishers in the Mid-Suburban League, the Huskies came away with a 25-22, 20-25, 28-26 decision.

Angelo Coniglio (10 kills) and Matt Hopkins (8) led the attack for Hersey, while setter Vince Reisel was 83-for-84 for 29 assists and Justin Hong was 14-for-16 serving with 5 aces and also had a team-best 15 digs.

Palatine's leaders included Zach Wheat (23-for-27 hitting, 14 kills), Jake Boldog (33 assists), Johnny O'Shea (3 blocks) and Andrew Padilla (13 digs).

Rolling Meadows d. Schaumburg: Logan Reese (12 kills) and Tommy Murphy (11) led the attack as the Mustangs came up with a 23-25, 25-13, 25-18 victory.

Kyle Kornblum, Joe Tunzi, Bill Psarros and Murphy were each perfect from the service line for Rolling Meadows, and Marc Quezada had a team-high 13 digs.

Elk Grove d. Fremd: The Grenadiers prevailed 25-12, 25-23 behind strong results from Anthony Prochenski (10-for-10 serving, 3 aces and 12 digs), Brendon Rathman (10 kills), John Duncker (18 assists) and Connor Emmerich (4 blocks).

Elk Grove squared its overall record at 17-17.

Fremd (10-17) got 7 kills from Patrick Benka and 5 from Aaron Kuhlman, while Kaleb Scharman generated 12 assists and Jeremiah Chang had 5 digs.

Hoffman Estates d. Wheeling: The host Hawks got 8 digs and 5 kills from Miguel Pineda in earning a 25-13, 25-20 victory over the Wildcats.

Other big contributors for the Hawks were Michael Swan (4 kills, 6 digs), Alan Zapinski (14-for-15 serving, 5 assists), T.J. Rogers (9 assists), Khalil Greaves (4 kills) and J.D. Lynch (4 kills).
