Join Schaumburg library's reading challenge, programs

Sweet summertime! You can almost smell the scents of roses, coconut sunscreen and burgers on the grill. At the Schaumburg Library, we're jumping into summer on Wednesday, June 1, with a day of fun activities and an evening of music to kick off the Summer Challenge: "From Seed to Bloom."

Sign up and read, play, explore and learn to earn badges. Earning five badges completes the challenge and you'll win a prize. A new online log makes it easy to track your summer reading and activities. Check out the "From Seed to Bloom" garden-related programs in the library's June-July Program Guide, and visit our gardens at all three library locations.

But that's not all. In the weeks following the kick off, there will be an ongoing array of entertainment, activities and opportunities, from a Medieval Faire to a traveling zoo, so read on to start planning your summer fun at the library.

On the June 1 Kickoff day, all ages are invited to color their world in a group art project from 3:30-6:30 p.m. in kidsZone. Families can paint a huge wooden cutout of the words "From Seed to Bloom" created by Chicago artist Mathew Hoffman. The finished project will be displayed at the library throughout the summer. When evening comes, get ready to rock with popular a cappella group AcRock from 7-7:45 p.m. in Town Square.

Other all-ages programs include the Medieval Faire, from 6:30-8:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 22 in Town Square. This evening of music, falconry and a sword fighting demonstration will be preceded by the "Prince and Princess Costume Ball," from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in kidsZone. Families are invited to come dressed in their royal finery to celebrate with some medieval fantasy fun.

Another new event this summer is a Variety Show for ages five on up, from 6:30-8 p.m., Wednesday, July 13 in Town Square. Everyone's a star in this talent show, so whether you sing, dance, juggle, have a comedy routine, play music, or something else, you'll have your moment in the spotlight. Interested performers should send an email by July 5 to teen@stdl.org with their names, ages and talents. All are welcome to attend the show in the Town Square amphitheater.

How about some relaxation under the summer sky? "Sunset Yoga" will take place from 6:45-7:45 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 3 in Town Square. Those participating in this all-ages program should bring their own yoga mat or towel.

Indoor family programs throughout the summer will include the "Tale of Peter Rabbit" in June at all three library locations, the "Scales and Tales Traveling Zoo" in July, also at all three locations, and "Family Game Day" in July at the library's Hoffman Estates Branch. Please check the library's June-July Program Guide for more programs, details, and registration information, or call the library at (847) 985-4000. If you're looking for opportunities to learn, be creative and let your imagination bloom, look no further than the Schaumburg Township District Library.
