Aurora Noon Lions sell brooms again

Aurora Noon Lions Club is back in the broom business. Broom sales raise funds for Lions' vision- and hearing-conservation programs for youth and adults.

Jerry Spirk, past president of Aurora Noon Lions, revived broom sales in 2012 after a half-century hiatus from the 1960s when Lions sold brooms door to door for about 20 years.

Brooms available include a children's model, $5; kitchen model, $10; corn model, $12; and push broom, $15.

Locations to purchase brooms during business hours are: Luigi's Pizza, 732 Prairie St. in Aurora; Rodrigo Menendez State Farm Insurance agency, 1405 W. Indian Trail Road, Aurora; and Fox Metro Water Reclamation District, 682 Route 31 in Oswego.

Brooms also will be available at Dick's Mini-Donuts' booth at summer farmer's markets in downtown Aurora.

O'Cedar Co. in Paxton, Ill., supplies brooms to Aurora Noon Lions.

Spirk said Lions Clubs nationwide started selling brooms as fundraisers after World War II. Sales were suspended in the 1970s.

Said Michelle Needham, Aurora Noon Lions president, "Selling items that people need, such as brooms, plus items that people crave, such as candy, pancake breakfasts and pasta and pizza dinners, has been a staple of Lions' fundraising efforts for decades.

"Where there's a need, there's a Lion."

Aurora Noon Lions Club meets on first and third Mondays at Luigi's Pizza in Aurora. Prospective members are invited to visit. Call (630) 466-1961 for more information.
