Palatine man faces DUI after driving on sidewalk, declaring self "designated driver," police say

A Palatine man who told police he was the "designated driver" after driving on a sidewalk in West suburban Riverside early Sunday is facing a driving under the influence charge, authorities said. According to police, an officer attempted to pull over a vehicle driven by Robert Kaminski, 61, after seeing it swerving on Ogden Avenue and traveling 44 mph in a 25 mph zone. When the squad car lights turned on, the vehicle started driving on the sidewalk before finally coming to a stop next to a restaurant, police said. Full story.

Runners brave record cold for 16th annual Rosary 5K

Running against a cold wind, about 100 people pushed through the 40-degree temperatures on Aurora's west side yesterday morning to raise money for Rosary High School scholarships. The 16th annual Road Scholars 5K Run/Walk, sponsored by the Rosary High School Alumnae Association, drew a hearty field of runners, including the school's entire math department, many alumnae and even a few runners who took the 3.1-mile USATF-certified course without shirts. As they do every year, thousands of people lined the streets of Lombard on Sunday to watch the annual Lilac Parade. "It really brings the community together to have a good time," said Ellyn Murphy, parade committee chairwoman. "It's a good kickoff to summertime." Full story.

Man in custody after attempted Arlington Heights home invasion

Police had at least one person in custody yesterday in connection with an apparent attempted home invasion on the south side of Arlington Heights as well as a later disturbance at a Palatine bank, authorities said. Full story.

Historical figures come to life during Palatine cemetery walk

The history of the men and women who lived through the founding of Palatine in 1866 were brought to life yesterday during the Sesquicentennial Cemetery Walk at Palatine Township's Hillside Cemetery. The Palatine Historical Society introduced historical figures during the walk, including Palatine's first mayor, Myron Lytle, a Civil War veteran and an early settler. Other actors dressed in period costumes explained what life was like in the village during in the 1800s. Full story.
