Marmion student dies after Friday accident

A 17-year-old Marmion Academy student died today after falling off a vehicle's running board Friday in the Aurora school's north parking lot.

Stephen J. Woodcock, 17, of St. Charles died at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. He had been flown directly to the hospital after the accident around 3:45 p.m. Friday at the school, 1000 Butterfield Road.

Aurora police said Woodcock was riding on the passenger-side running board and holding on to a 2011 Acura MDX being driven by Jerin Martin, 18, of the 3000 block of Elleby Court in North Aurora.

Martin told police he was driving about 10 mph, police said, and when he made a left turn, Woodcock apparently lost his grip and fell backward off the vehicle, striking the pavement and suffering head and other injuries.

Martin has been charged with reckless driving and police have not ruled out additional charges.

Academy officials did not immediately return a phone call Monday afternoon. But the academy did post the following message on Facebook:

"Marmion is deeply saddened by the death of senior Stephen Woodcock. Stephen was injured on Friday and has been hospitalized and treated since that time. He was greatly loved by all who knew him. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Stephen at this time of loss. We ask that you join us with your continued prayers."
