Des Plaines-area man charged in weekend shooting

An 18-year-old Des Plaines-area man is facing a felony weapons charge stemming from allegations he shot a man who was attempting to force his way into his residence Saturday morning to collect a debt.

Miguel Esquivel, of the 400 block of West Touhy Avenuem had his bail set at $50,000 Monday on a charge of aggravated unlawful use of weapon. The shooting left a 27-year-old Plainfield man in critical condition.

Esquivel also is being held without bail on an unrelated aggravated battery charge, for which he was out on bail at the time of the shooting.

Police from the Cook County sheriff's office, Des Plaines and Rosemont were called to Esquivel's residence at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in response to reports of a possible home invasion. When they arrived, they found a man unresponsive on the ground with gunshot wounds.

The Plainfield man was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he remained in critical condition Monday.

During their investigation, Cook County sheriff's police they learned the shooting victim man had tried to force his way into Esquivel's residence to collect money, authorities said. Esquivel used a gun inside the residence to shoot the man multiple times before hiding the weapon under a neighbor's porch, authorities said.

Esquivel's next court date on the earlier aggravated battery charge is Wednesday. His next court date on the weapons charge is June 9.
