Normal looks to revive Route 66 landmark as tourist draw

NORMAL, Ill. (AP) - A historic former gas station and Route 66 landmark in Normal could become a city-owned tourist attraction.

The (Bloomington) Pantagraph (http://bit.ly/1V41yqm ) reports that the City Council is scheduled to vote Monday on the purchase of the onetime Sprague's service station.

City Manager Mark Peterson says the town has been negotiating the purchase for the past year. The council will consider spending $229,000 to buy the property and $200,000 for building improvements.

The current owner purchased the property in 2006 in hopes of converting it into a bed and breakfast along with a gift shop and restaurant.

The 85-year-old building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a town landmark.
