Boys track and field: Fast start, but a Saturday finish for Prospect and Mid-Suburban teams
Only one thing hampered the hot start for Prospect's boys track and field team Friday night at the Mid-Suburban League meet at Rolling Meadows.
After taking the first three events on the track, Mother Nature took over and halted the meet.
"Back at it again tomorrow," said Prospect coach Frank Mirandola.
Two weather delays due to heavy rains and lightning forced postponement of the meet. It's schedule to resume at 10 a.m. Saturday, with the varsity 100-meter dash. The shot put and triple jump will also be completed Saturday.
Prospect captured the 3,200 relay as the team of Luke Filipec, Joe Riordan, Mackenzie Bach and Teddy Eckhardt ran away from the field. Fremd and Hoffman Estates finished second and third.
The Knights' 400 relay team of Anthony Kies, Dante Cecala, Nick Konstantinou and Brady Schwartz ran a season-best 43.03 to win the conference title. Hoffman Estates ran second.
Hoffman did get an event win as senior Jelyn Hill cleared 6 feet, 7 inches in the high jump. Hill also had the best mark in the long jump, leaping 22 feet even.
Nebraska-bound senior Karsen LeComte pulled away from the field with 800 meters remaining to win the 3,200 run in 9:22.27 - a season-best clocking for LeComte. Brian Leonard of Palatine was second.
Elk Grove senior Danny Dalenberg took top honors in the discus, with Jaylen Alexander of Hoffman Estates second. Alexander improved his seeding by better than 20 feet with his 152-0 throw.
The host Mustangs earned an event win with Zach Gunger capturing the pole vault with a clearance of 13-7.
