Girls water polo: Fremd, Conant meet for sectional title
Mid-Suburban League girls water polo champion Fremd will play for a sectional title in its own pool Saturday.
The Vikings (24-6) advanced in the postseason by turning back Rolling Meadows 6-4 on Friday in the first of two semifinals hosted by Fremd.
The Mustangs completed the program's best-ever season with a record of 22-9.
Fremd will meet Conant at 12:30 p.m. Saturday with an Elite Eight tournament berth at stake.
The third-seeded Cougars (18-12) edged second-seeded Barrington 7-6 in the final game Friday at Fremd and will be attempting to make a second straight trip to state.
Sam Wooley, who finished with a game-high 5 goals, scored the decisive goal with 26 seconds left after Conant had taken a 5-4 lead into the final period.
Paulina Chowaniec had 2 goals for Conant, and Cam Rosas made 9 saves.
Mia Latimer (3 goals), Andrea Potgieter (2) and Isabella Rojas (1) accounted for the scoring for Barrington (23-6).
Buffalo Grove sectional: Top-seeded Stevenson earned a spot in the sectional title game by ousting Palatine 14-2 in Friday's first semifinal at BG.
Allison Travetto (4 goals) and Claire Haas and Eileen Hoang (3 each) led the scoring effort for the Patriots (31-1), who are ranked No. 1 in the state.
Seniors Kelsey Hank and Mathilde Mogensen both scored once for the Pirates (14-16), who got 10 saves from senior goalie Tess O'Brien.
Glenbrook South sectional: New Trier eliminated Maine West 15-2 and will play for a sectional title at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
