Officers killed in line of duty remembered in Lake County

About 50 officials, judges and spectators joined about 75 law enforcement officers at the Lincoln Memorial Plaza in Waukegan on Friday to honor police officers killed in the line of duty.

Speakers at the annual Lake County Police Memorial included Waukegan Police Chief Wayne Walles, Lake County Board Chairman Aaron Lawlor, Lake County State's Attorney Michael Nerheim, Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran, Lake County Undersheriff Raymond Rose and John Tannahill, chief of the Lake County Chiefs of Police Association.

The ceremony, outside the Lake County government center, also featured memorials including a 21-gun salute, the playing of Taps, and the song "Amazing Grace" performed by the Northern Illinois Pipes and Drums group.

"Today, we honor and pray for those we lost, and we pray for their families," Lawlor said.

Police departments in Lake County have lost 17 officers in the line of duty since Det. Patrick H. Owens was killed Aug. 25, 1894.
