Purported head of Chicago street gang sentenced to life

CHICAGO (AP) - A federal judge has sentenced the purported leader of a Chicago street gang to life in prison for murder and drug-trafficking conspiracies.

Prosecutors say 47-year-old Nathaniel Hoskins led the Imperial Insane Vice Lords and ordered at least one murder as he oversaw drug sales on the city's West Side. They say Hoskins personally handled purchases of cocaine and heroin.

Judge Elaine Bucklo handed down the sentence at a Thursday hearing in Chicago. Hoskins was convicted at a 2015 bench trial for taking part in drug and murder conspiracies, as well as leading a racketeering enterprise.

The U.S. attorney's office in Chicago says more than 30 people with suspected ties to the Imperial Insane Vice Lords have been arrested and charged in related investigations.
