'Writers Read Emerging Voices' Showcase Draws More Than 150

More than 150 people attended the "Writers Read Emerging Voices" creative writing winners' showcase, celebrating short stories, novels, excerpts, creative nonfiction and poetry submitted by COD students, faculty, staff and members of the community.

"Emerging Voices" contest winners include: Lisa Berquist, "A Normal Brother," Second Place, Fiction; Cally Cortado, "the drive," Second Place, Poetry; Julianna Doll, "Four Days a Libra," Honorable Mention, Fiction; Ixta Julieta, "Sad Café," First Place, Poetry; Ida Kotyuk, "Looking for vanGogh's Bedroom," First Place, Creative Nonfiction; Brian McKenna, "The Mourning After," Second Place, Creative Nonfiction; John McNamara, "Testimony," First Place, Fiction; Tara Tsaparis, "8x8," Honorable Mention, Poetry; Florence M. Zielinski, "My Mother Ran with Me Last Night: Winter 1991," Honorable Mention, Poetry.

Contest winners received cash prizes and first place entries will be published in the Prairie Light Review, the College's award-winning juried literary magazine.

In addition to readings from the contest winners, the event featured guest authors Tony Bowers and T. Sean Steele who also read and discussed their work.

For the last 17 years the Writers Read series has brought dozens of nationally acclaimed writers to College of DuPage.
