Keane and Gerrard score as Galaxy beat New England 4-2
WASHINGTON (AP) - Robbie Keane and Steven Gerrard both scored in their first match back from injury to lead the Los Angeles Galaxy to a 4-2 win over the New England Revolution in MLS on Sunday while David Villa also struck as New York City made it back-to back wins for the first time this season with a 2-0 victory over D.C. United.
Keane had been sidelined for almost two months after undergoing knee surgery but the Ireland skipper came though his comeback match unscathed, scoring two first half-goals before being replaced by Gerrard after an hour.
LA led 3-0 at the break after Mexican Giovani dos Santos blasted a volley into the back of the net from the edge of the box but came under intense pressure in the second half when Kelyn Rowe and Juan Agudelo scored three minutes apart. But the Galaxy made sure of the three points when Gerrard scored in stoppage time.
The win was LA's 300th in MLS and moved the Galaxy into second place in the Western Conference standings, behind Colorado.
New York climbed to fourth spot in the Eastern Conference after Villa joined Portland's Nigerian forward Fanendo Adi and San Jose's American striker Chris Wondolowski as the leading scorers this season with seven goals apiece.
The former Spanish World Cup winner broke the deadlock when he scored four minutes into the second half before Khiry Shelton added a second four minutes later to give New York a two goal cushion.
