Baseball: Prospect prevails at Elk Grove

Prospect's baseball team pulled within 2 games of Mid-Suburban East leader Elk Grove by topping the host Grens 10-5 on Monday.

Both teams have three MSL games remaining.

The Knights led by 1 run entering the seventh inning but gained plenty of breathing room with a 6-run rally.

Brendan O'Brien had a double in the big seventh inning for Prospect and finished 3-for-4 with 2 runs scored. Grant Zellmer also had an RBI double in the seventh for the Knights; he finished 2-for-4 with 3 RBI.

Ben Courtney pitched 6⅓ innings and earned the victory after allowing 6 hits, 5 walks and 2 earned runs.

AJ Lorenz doubled and drove in 2 runs for Elk Grove (18-9, 10-3).

The Grens committed 5 errors, and Prospect had 4.

Prospect (16-7, 8-5) hosts the Knights as MSL East play continues Wednesday.

Palatine 3, Schaumburg 2: Starter Chris Refka limited the visiting Saxons to 3 singles to lift Palatine in MSL West play.

The Pirates (14-13, 8-5) finished with 5 hits, but they all came from the Nos. 1 through 3 hitters in the lineup. Matt Lamm went 2-for-4 with a double and scored twice, Jack Grochowski went 2-for-4 and drove in 2 runs and Zach Oles drove in 1 run with a hit.

Tyler Fredrickson drove in both runs for Schaumburg (11-12, 5-8), and Nick Pentz pitched 2 hitless and scoreless inning in relief of Parker Nolan.

Rolling Meadows 5, Wheeling 4: Trent McNally produced a 2-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning to help the host Mustangs to their fourth win in the last five games.

Wheeling had gone ahead by 1 run in the top half of the inning after generating a 2-run rally of its own.

Christian Hubbard had a productive game for the Wildcats, finishing 3-for-4 from the leadoff spot with a double, 1 RBI and 1 run scored. Alex Khatcherian drove in 2 runs for Wheeling.

Alex Rezny went 2-for-2 with a double and a walk for Rolling Meadows (4-19, 4-9). The Mustangs also got doubles from Marco Perez and Ryan Laboda, and

Ellis Shalton earned a victory in relief of George Bravos (5 IP, 2 ER, 7 hits), and Mark Dillon picked up a save after getting the last three outs.

Hoffman Estates 8, Conant 2: Ryan Davalos threw a complete-game 4-hitter to help the Hawks pick up a road victory in the MSL West.

At the plate, Davalos doubled and a drove in 2 runs in a 2-for-3 effort and leadoff man Marc Gonzalez finished 2-for-5 with 1 RBI and 2 stolen bases as Hoffman Estates (9-14, 3-11) won its second straight.

Ryan Roberts tripled and drove in a run for Conant (13-14, 6-7).

Hersey 8, Buffalo Grove 2: The host Huskies pulled into a third-place tie by picking up an MSL East victory.

Cade O'Neal had an RBI single in the second inning, and Brett Harris produced a 2-run double as Hersey led 7-1 after the third inning.

Huskies starter Brendan Stonequist earned the victory after lasting 6⅔ innings and allowing 6 hits. Buzz Lindgren got the final out for Hersey (10-13, 6-7).

Buffalo Grove (11-14, 6-7), which committed 4 errors, got a double and a triple from Ben Moran and a 2-for-3 effort from leadoff hitter Joey Pinakidis.
