Softball: Schaumburg outscores Palatine

Schaumburg 15, Palatine 9: There were lots of runs scored in Monday's Mid-Suburban League West softball game between host Schaumburg and Palatine.

When it was over, Schaumburg had the most in a 15-9 triumph that raised the Saxons record to 15-7 and 9-3.

Winning pitcher Michelle Birkholz (3-for-5, home run, double, 4 RBI), Kaiden Jackson (3-for-5, 2 RBI), Paige Alt (2-for-4, double, 2 RBI), Micaela Encarnacion (3-for-4, double, double, RBI) and Sarah Schwind (3-for-3, 2 RBI) were multiple hitters for Schaumburg.

Christina Candotti (RBI), Brittney Butt (RBI) and Cate Poplar also had hits for the hosts. Birkholz improved to 7-2 and 4-0.

Palatine (8-14, 5-8) was led by Grace Huff (2-for-4), Kenzie Craver (2-for-5, double, RBI), Emily Parrott (2-for-4, double) and Brooke Bauer (2-for-4, RBI). Maddie Craver and Megan Breytenbach had RBI singles for the Pirates.

Elk Grove 18, Buffalo Grove 3 (5 inn): Sabra Morton belted her first career homer for MSL East leading Elk Grove (19-3, 9-3).

Alex Masnica also had homer and double while going 2-for-4 for the Grens visiting Grens.

Other top hitters were Haley Itzenthaler (3-for-5, double), Mackenzie Flannery (3-for-4), Alex Masnica (2-for-4), Sarah Pauscher (3-for-4), Carly Crothers (2-for-3) and Amy Pietruszysnki (2-for-4),

Grace Gran, Jacqueline Bickhaus, Bailey Williams, Hannah Young and Lauren Beiersdorf had the hits for BG (5-17, 3-10).

Junior Kylie Thomsen raised her record to 10-3 with the win.

Hersey 12, Prospect 1 (5 inn.): Junior Katie Wingerter, Hersey's single-season school record holder for home runs, added two more and freshman teammate Makayla Tsagalis belted a grand slam for visiting Hersey against Prospect (5-16, 3-9).

The Huskies (14-10, 8-5) have won six straight and Wingerter has 13 homers this spring.

Fremd 20, Hoffman Estates 2 (5 inn.): Jessica Mazur (6-1) threw a 2-hitter with 11 strikeouts as visiting Fremd improved to 19-4 and 10-2 in the MSL West.

Top hitters for the Vikings were Ann Marie O'Sullivan (2-for-2, sacrifice fly), Reagan Schneider (2-for-3, walk), Becca Uhrich (2-for-4, triple) and Alyssa Garcia (3-for-4, triple, walk).

Brynn Connelly (RBI) and Jordyn Fera (1-for-2, walk) had the hits for Hoffman (3-21, 1-12).

Rolling Meadows 19, Wheeling 4 (5 inn): Elizabeth Elkins (3-for-3, 2 doubles, 2 RBI, 2 runs), Amanda Elkins (3-for-3, 2 RBI), Lydia Schultz (2-for-2, RBI), Emily Schmidt (3-for-5, 2 runs), Jessica Ligenza (2-for-2, 3 runs) and Megan King (2-for-3, double, 3 RBI, 2 runs) led the offense for the visiting Mustangs (14-12, 5-7).

Winning pitcher Schultz (4 strikeouts) and Elise Kowalski (1 strikeout) shared pitching duties for Meadows.

Nikki Ferraro went 2-for-3 with a RBI and 1 run for Wheeling (0-15, 0-11).

Benet 6, St. Viator 2: Haley Robinson had a homer and doubled for host St. Viator (9-15, 1-8) while teammate Jenna Breslin doubled.

"Timing is everything and we couldn't get the big hit when we needed it." said Lions coach John Scotillo.

Viator left 11 runners on base. They had runners on base in every inning but one and scored in the third on back-to-back doubles by Robinson and Breslin.

Viator's final run scored Robinson's third hit, a solo homer to lead off the seventh.

Benet scored 3 in the third and might have more but

Left fielder Olivia Michalik threw out a runner at in the third inning.

Another defensive highlight came when Cam VanValkenburg ended a Benet rally by doubling up a runner at home from center field.

St. Viator outfielders have 8 assists this spring.
