Police detain two juveniles in rash of Buffalo Grove car burglaries

Two juveniles broke into and ransacked 16 unlocked vehicles - stealing the car in one instance - over a nine-day period late last month in Buffalo Grove, police said Monday.

The juveniles, a Des Plaines resident and an Evanston resident, also took money and other items during some of the break-ins, which occurred between April 23 to May 1 in the area of Deerfield Parkway and Buffalo Grove Road, according to police.

The suspects admitted to being responsible for the break-ins and have since been released to their parents, Deputy Police Chief Roy Bethge said. Charges have not yet been filed.

The juveniles were detained May 1 after a resident of the 1100 block of Brandywyn Court found one of them in his 2009 Ford Edge parked in the house's garage, police said. The juvenile had used a garage door opener in the resident's unlocked 2010 Ford pickup truck that was in the driveway to access the garage, according to police.

After the resident confronted the juvenile, he and the other juvenile walked away, police said. However, the resident was able to identify the juvenile after police later found him walking along Deerfield Parkway.

Among the allegations against the pair is that they stole a 2014 Nissan Maxima between 10:30 p.m. April 23 and 2:30 a.m. April 24 from an open garage on the 900 block of Hobson Drive. The ignition key was left in the cupholder of the vehicle. The car was recovered in Des Plaines on April 26 and returned to its owner.

Police reports show several unlocked vehicles were entered and ransacked between April 23 and 25, cash and cigarettes taken from some of the vehicles. Reports show more unlocked vehicles were entered and ransacked between April 28 and May 1, with a laptop computer, a GPS and cash among the items stolen.
