Non-tenure faculty at U of Illinois agree to first contract

URBANA, Ill. (AP) - Faculty at the University of Illinois' flagship campus who are not on tenure tracks have approved a five-year contract their union negotiated with the school.

Union President Shawn Gilmore told The News-Gazette (http://bit.ly/1rynXR0 ) that members of the Non-Tenure Track Faculty Coalition Local 6546 "overwhelmingly" voted to approve the new deal. School and union negotiators tentatively agreed to the deal last weekend.

The contract is the first for the union for non-tenure faculty at the Urbana-Champaign campus. Union officials say the deal includes job-security measures they had sought such as the possibility of multi-year contracts. It also gives union members a say in faculty governance.

Union members staged two brief strikes this spring.
