Vernon Hills police offer women's self-defense class

Editor's note: Vernon Hills police said Friday the class is full.

A self-defense class hosted by Vernon Hills police at its headquarters at 740 Lakeview Parkway is full, a spokesman said Friday.

The class is free and was open to Vernon Hills residents age 8 and up. Instructor Harriet Johnson is a former police officer and an expert in self-defense, with more than 39 years of teaching experience in all aspects of self-defense and use of weapons. She is the director of the Criminal Justice program at McHenry County College.

Topics include: basic principles of survival and awareness; vulnerable areas of the body; psychology of fear and how to make it work for you; and the basic principles of self-defense. Call (847) 247-4889 for more information.
