Midwestern University's Chicago College of Pharmacy Receives Grant to Address Opioid Crisis

Midwestern University's Chicago College of Pharmacy (CCP) recently received a grant from the National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) Foundation. CCP will use the grant to address the ongoing opioid crisis by infusing comprehensive educational programming into the student curriculum. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 78 Americans die every day from an opioid (including prescription opioid pain relievers and heroin overdose).

The College will offer students new learning opportunities to help expand their understanding of pain management, learn how to detect opioid misuse, and develop treatments of overdose. For 25 years, the Chicago College of Pharmacy has been providing an outstanding education for its students by integrating a curriculum steeped in the basic and pharmaceutical sciences with the development of clinical knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to provide excellent patient care.

The NACDS Foundation is dedicated to advancing the interests and objectives of the community pharmacy industry by fostering its growth and promoting its role as a provider of healthcare services and consumer products. This year's NACDS grant recipients were selected from more than 40 general and diversity scholarship applications submitted from deans of accredited colleges and schools of pharmacy across the country. Six grants were awarded to applicants for innovative education programs in the amount of $20,000 each.
