Baseball: Hersey stays hot, tops Elk Grove

Hersey's baseball team overcame another big effort from Elk Grove's Christian Camacho in Mid-Suburban East baseball on Tuesday.

Camacho finished 4-for-4 with 3 doubles, but the Huskies won for the second straight in league play, this time 6-3.

Brendan Stonequist earned the pitching decision after tossing 7 innings, allowing 9 hits and striking out three. Paul Tokar had a pair of hits and drove in 2 runs, while Tanner Luke doubled twice. Hersey (7-12, 4-6) also got 2 hits from Owen Goldsberry.

Elk Grove (15-7) lost for only the second time against an MSL foe, slipping to 8-2.

Prospect 7, Wheeling 4 (9 inn.): Prospect tied its Mid-Suburban East game at Wheeling with a run in the top of the seventh inning, then won it in the ninth with a 3-run rally for a final score of 7-4 on Tuesday.

Grant Whitebloom homered and drove in 3 runs for the Prospect (14-5, 6-4). Joining the power show for the Knights with solo homers were Ryan Howe, Brendan O'Brien and John Morgan.

Wheeling (9-15, 2-8) got a double from Alex Khatcherian.

Jake Arndt pitched 7 innings and got the victory. He struck out five and allowed 3 hits.

St. Viator 4, St. Patrick 2: Jack Sexton had a successful key at-bat for the second straight day, this time squeezing home the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning with a bunt as host St. Viator picked up a victory against one of the East Suburban Catholic Conference's top teams.

The Lions scored twice in the sixth to break up a game that had been tied.

Dan Sullivan doubled twice and drove in a run, and Tim Alfonso also had a double for St. Viator.

Cole Kmet excelled on the mound for the Lions (13-10), tossing a complete-game 5-hitter with 7 strikeouts.

Fremd 8, Conant 2: Jared Swenson tossed a complete-game 5-hitter to help the visiting Vikings pick up another MSL West triumph.

Fremd put 4 runs up in the top of the first inning - on one swing of the bat, as Ethan Hajdukovic hit a grand slam.

Charlie Kaye, Jake LaGasse and JT Kolderup each finished with 2 hits for the Vikings (12-5, 9-2).

Jack Reiger had a pair of hits for the Cougars (11-13, 4-6).

Christian Liberty 18, IMSA 7: The visiting Chargers pounded out 20 hits, including a triple by Ben Law, in a decisive nonconference victory. Christian Liberty committed 1 error behind Law, who earned the pitching decision.

Deerfield 5, Maine West 4: The hosts rallied with 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on their way to a Central Suburban North victory.

Maine West (9-11) got 2 hits from Sean Russell, and Dan Johnston doubled and drove in a run.

Deerfield (12-6, 6-3) got a 2-for-3 effort at the plate along with a winning decision from Ben Charlson.
