5,000 books to be distributed during El Dia de Los Ninos Saturday

The city of Aurora Hispanic Heritage Advisory Board will host its annual El Día de los Niños celebration from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 7, at the Aurora Transportation Center lot, Spring Street and Lincoln Avenue in downtown Aurora.

This traditional Latin American event recognizes children, pays homage to their importance in society and endorses their well-being. The free celebration is being held in partnership with the Aurora Public Library, West Aurora Unit District 129, East Aurora Unit District 131, Oswego Unit District 308 and Indian Prairie Unit District 204.

This year's theme is "Promoting Science" and all school districts have contributed funding to support the distribution of over 5,000 books to children who visit literacy stations staffed by volunteer teachers.

Activities will include stage performances by the West Aurora and East Aurora Children's Choirs, singers from Oswego School District and Indian Prairie School District, Ballet Folklorico Quetzalcoatl, Simply Destinee Dance Team, Aztec Dance Troupe, and Los Tiliches del Baul Puppet Company from Guanajuato, Mexico.

Other organizations providing free children's activities include SciTech Hands-on Museum, Aurora Police Department, Aurora Fire Department, Sonos de Mexico, and the Fox Valley Orchestra. A rock wall, sponsored by the Three Fires Council Boy Scouts of America, and several bouncy houses and inflatable obstacle courses will be on-site for the children.

In addition to the school districts and the library, El Día de los Niños is co-sponsored by the City of Aurora, Old Second Bank, the Aurora Housing Authority, WLEY La Ley, Home Depot, Aurora Bank and Trust, Rasmussen College, ChiroOne, Countrywide Financial, Earthmover Credit Union, Rush Copley, Hollywood Casino and North Star Credit Union.

It is free and open to the public.
