Mitsubishi plant in Illinois sold to Michigan company

NORMAL, Ill. (AP) - A Mitsubishi Motors plant in central Illinois town has been sold to a Michigan-based auction company for an undisclosed price.

Mitsubishi ended production in November at the Normal, Illinois. The facility will shut down May 31.

The (Bloomington) Pantagraph reports (http://bit.ly/1Utfz0E) that suburban Detroit-based Maynards Industries plans to take possession of the plant on June 1.

Bloomington Mayor Tari Renner says he hopes Maynards will market the plant and draw interest from employers.

Normal City Manager Mark Peterson says Maynards is "very well-connected within the automobile manufacturing industry." Peterson speculates the company will be motivated to sell the facility and recover its investment.

The plant once employed about 1,200 people to make the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport.
