Chicago light pole falls on 3 girls, injuring 1

CHICAGO (AP) - A Chicago high school student is reported in serious condition after a light pole fell on a group of students on their lunch break.

The incident Monday in the city's Hyde Park neighborhood resulted in a 16-year-old being hospitalized at Northwestern Memorial Hospital with a compound leg fracture.

Chicago police Sgt. Isaac Lambert says he on patrol nearby when he saw the pole falling, adding he ran to help the girls. Two girls were fine, but the third girl was screaming for her parents.

Lambert says he and a passer-by lifted the pole off the girl, who attends Kenwood High School.

Officials of the city's Transportation Department said they weren't sure what caused the pole to fall. Spokesman Michael Claffey said the pole was "decades old."
