Laid-off Warrick Alcoa workers to get help to find new jobs

NEWBURGH, Ind. (AP) - More than 300 workers who lost their jobs last month when Alcoa closed its Warrick County smelter in southwestern Indiana may be eligible to get federal help to find a new job.

The Evansville Courier & Press reports (http://bit.ly/1rG0Qo9) the U.S. Department of Labor has opened Trade Adjustment Assistance to the former Alcoa employees. The assistance includes career and financial support to workers who have been laid off because of foreign trade.

The United Steelworkers filed a petition requesting help for the workers. It cited foreign companies with cheaper products as the reason the plant shut down.

WorkOne Southwest Executive Director Jim Heck says workers will receive mailed notification of their eligibility. WorkOne is a career assistance company that will provide help to employees as they navigate their benefits.
