Boys volleyball: Hersey sweeps to invitational trimph

Hersey's boys volleyball team improved to 18-3 by sweeping the competition in the tournament it hosted Saturday.

And the Huskies did it efficiently, winning all five of their matches in two sets in a six-team field.

St. Viator finished 3-2, winning tiebreakers with Glenbrook South and South Elgin to claim third place.

Six-foot-3 senior outside hitter Angelo Coniglio finished with a team-high 51 kills for Hersey, while sophomore Jacob Mailloux and senior Daniel Swan had 24 kills each.

Ryan Bayerle led Hersey in blocks with 23, and Justin Hong had 54 digs while Vince Reisel racked up 117 assists.

Max Hogan (42 kills), James Woods (36) and Nathaniel Cull (24) led the attack for St. Viator.

• Elk Grove's boys volleyball team delivered a 3-2 performance at Libertyville to take fifth place in the eight-team field.

The Grens topped Prospect, Oak Forest and Lake Forest and dropped matchups with Libertyville and Deerfield.

Kevin Braceros (42 kills), Shivam Patel (32) and Brendon Rathman (32) led the attack for Elk Grove (7-13). Othe rkey contributors included Ed Gonzalez (121 assists), Anthony Prochenski (58 digs) and Tom Sulima (11 blocks). Braceros also contributed 43 digs.

Palatine finished with a 2-3 record at Libertyville, couting wins against Lake Forest and St. Rita and losses to Prospect, Libertyville and Deerfield.

Zach Wheat (44 kills) and Johnny O'Shea (33) led the Pirates' attack as Jake Boldog finished with 94 assists and Andrew Padilla gather a team-best 51 digs.
