Richmond's top prosecutor clears State Police in shooting

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Richmond's top prosecutor has cleared the Virginia State Police of any wrongdoing in a shooting at the Greyhound station in Richmond in which a trooper and the man who shot him died.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/1NJMKvo ) reports Richmond Commonwealth's Attorney Michael N. Herring said in a letter that his office finds "no basis for further criminal investigation" into the March 31 shooting of 34-year-old James Brown III of Aurora, Illinois.

Brown opened fire on 37-year-old trooper Chad Dermyer moments after Dermyer approached him at the bus station. Nearby troopers who were training along with Dermyer returned fire. Both men later died.

Herring said in his letter that Brown was an "unprovoked aggressor" and that police responded to "Brown's aggression with appropriate lethal force." What provoked Brown to shoot is unclear.
