How music helped soldiers cope with Vietnam War

The authors of "We Gotta Get Out of This Place: The Soundtrack of the Vietnam War" discuss how and why U.S. troops turned to music as a way of coping with the complexities of the war they were commanded to fight during a presentation at Cantigny Park.

Authors Doug Bradley and Craig Werner speak at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 11, in the Cantigny Visitors Center, 1S151 Winfield Road, Wheaton. The authors will play music from the Vietnam era and discuss the influence it had on soldiers and public opinion in the 1960s and '70s.

Bradley, a Vietnam veteran, and Werner, professor of Afro-American Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, interviewed dozens of veterans and musicians for their widely acclaimed book, published in 2015.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. A cash bar and limited food menu will be available. Coffee is complimentary. Copies of "We Gotta Get Out of This Place" may be purchased in the Cantigny Shop inside the Visitors Center.

The program and parking are free. For details, visit firstdivisionmuseum.org.
