St. Charles Public Library offers free computer classes in May

The St. Charles Public Library, 1 S. Sixth Ave., is offering free classes during the month of May for library cardholders. The classes include: "Backing Up Your Data," "Computer and Internet Basics," "Care and Feeding of Your Computer," and "Twitter 101."

• "Backing up Your Data," scheduled for Thursday, May 5 from 6:30-8:30 p.m., will look at various ways to back up your important data such as pictures, videos, music, email, etc. Options, including the "Cloud" and online services, will be examined.

• "Computer and Internet Basics," scheduled for Monday, May 9 and Tuesday, May 10 from 10 a.m. to noon, is ideal for those who have had little exposure to computers. There will be an overview of parts of the computer and terminology including: desktop, menus, mouse instruction, scrolling, clicking, keying, saving, and basic Internet skills. The class is two, 2-hour sessions that must be taking in succession. Successful completion of this class is a prerequisite to all other computer classes offered.

• "Care & Feeding of Your Computer" is scheduled for Thursdays, May 12 and 19 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. In these two 2-hour sessions, you will learn to maintain your computer for better performance, reliability, and usability, and learn how to keep your computer safe and enjoy your system more. Topics include: program install/uninstall considerations, disk and file maintenance, utility program usage, anti-virus and security options, power, heat, and dust considerations, hardware and software upgrade and update options.

• "Twitter 101" will cover the basics of using Twitter. Topics covered will include @replies, direct messages, hashtags, and retweets. Learn how to find people to follow and search for information about your interests. Participants need to establish their own Twitter account before coming to class. It is one 2-hour class scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 18.

All classes are held in the Tech Center and are open to St. Charles Public Library cardholders. A $10 refundable cash deposit is required at the time of registration.
