IU hospital in Muncie taking precautions for Legionella

MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) - An Indiana University hospital in Muncie is keeping water restrictions in place after tests last week found a positive test for the Legionella bacteria.

Jeff Bird is chief medical officer with IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital. He tells The (Muncie) Star Press (http://tspne.ws/1pKbFUh) that the hospital sent about 175 water samples for testing after a patient tested positive for Legionnaires disease. Bird says one sample from an outpatient section of the hospital came back positive so water restrictions will be in effect there.

The water source at the outpatient facility was treated Saturday. Restrictions that will stay in place up to two weeks include not drinking from faucets, sinks or fountains and no showers.

Water tests from the inpatient areas came back negative. Legionnaires disease is a respiratory illness contracted by inhaling the Legionella bacteria.
